Happy Halloween

I did not have a Halloween Wedding this weekend, but I wanted to do a short post in honor of Halloween.

What does Halloween and Weddings have in common?

Evil Spirits.

What? You think I am a crazy wedding planner, huh? I actually do not think that weddings have anything to do with evil spirits but I did learn something new. I am constantly researching anything and everything that has to deal with weddings, and here is what I read:

First, bride’s carry bouquets because in ancient times, it was believed that a bride could get rid of evil spirits by carrying strong-smelling herbs and spices.

Second, bridesmaids used to wear the exact same outfit as the bride, so that evil spirits would be confused as to just who was to be married.

I learned both of these things from this wedding book. (Page 80 and page 106).

Hope you had a great Halloween!

The Groom’s Cake

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Groom’s cakes are a southern tradition. They first came about to be a rich, chocolate cake to complement the white, fluffy bride’s cake. However, tradition has changed a little bit. Now-a-days, I see chocolate in the bride’s cake and white cake in the groom’s cake. I recommend choosing flavors that you and your fiance love and what you think your guests will enjoy!

Typically, the groom’s cake represents something that describes him. Maybe it is a sport’s team. Maybe it is his hobby such as fishing, hunting, playing poker, etc. Maybe it is simply just a chocolate cake.

Did you know that the groom’s cake usually was not served at the reception. It was sliced up in boxes for the guests to take home. Supposedly, if a single woman put the cake slice underneath her pillow while she slept, she would dream of her future husband! Ha! I have never seen a single woman at a wedding I plan ask me if she could take a slice home. Maybe when they start playing Beyonce’s, “All The Single Ladies” for the bouquet toss, I should go out there with cake slices in to-go boxes and hand them out! Then they will dream of their future hubby! :)

I Would Like to Shine the Spotlight On…

Christian and Holly Sangree are dear friends of my husband and I. We think they are great people with a great passion for photography and with a great talent. They are incredible at what they do. And I might be a little biased as he was my personal wedding photographer in 2006. I first met them when they shot our wedding (along with Happily Everlasting Photography that is no longer in Oklahoma). Then we went to the same church for a season and we got to know each other more. Then I began planning several weddings where they were photographers at. We have loved doing business and life together! I highly recommend Prints Charming Photography to any of my brides. Please, get to know them:

1. How long have you been in business?
Since March of 1999, so we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary in business!

2. How did you get involved in photography and how did Prints Charming Photography come into existence?
Holly: I started Prints Charming because I wanted to be able to contribute to the family income but also be a stay-at-home Mom. I started out photographing children of friends and as word spread, business picked up and we expanded into other areas of photography from there. We were married in 2003 and started working together on shoots, with me taking the pictures and Christian working with the clients and assisting.
Christian: We reinvested everything we made the first year or two to build up a good arsenal of pro lenses, bodies and other equipment. Whenever we’d buy something new, I’d enjoy reading the manual and showing Holly how it worked and that basically rekindled in my childhood love of photography. A nice camera with a Zeiss lens was my first big purchase as a kid. I saved up for it by delivering papers every day for a year and I was so proud of it! I just never imagined that I could ever make a living doing something fun like photography when I was a kid. It’s one of those hobbies that everyone enjoys but nobody really gets paid for unless you’re a superstar, you know? (At least that’s how it was back in the 80’s!)
Anyway, as Holly became busier with our own children, we transitioned the primary shooting from Holly to me. Holly still does a lot of photography at our weddings since we shoot a lot of those together, but on photo sessions I’m the main shooter these days, with Holly sometimes coming to assist with posing, lighting and getting the right smiles, especially with children or larger group portraits.

3. How would you describe your style of photography?

I’d have to answer this question two ways… I’d say our image style is romantic and vibrant; classic but fresh. Our shooting style is relaxed, candid, casual and fun… Capturing relationships and interactions between our subjects, whether at a wedding or even for family pictures.

4. What do you love about shooting weddings?
Christian: I’m such a people person, that I just love being around so many happy people on one of the most joyous occasions of life. At the end of a long wedding day, my face often hurst from smiling and laughing so much! I’m the kind of person that can’t help feeling the same way others around me feel, though. If someone’s crying, I have a hard time fighting back the tears myself.
Holly: Capturing the amazing details! So much thought goes into the details of a wedding and it’s really fun to capture them in artistic and unique ways.
5. What would you tell a bride regarding her pictures on her wedding day?
Christian: How important they are! Everything else can go wrong and you’ll eventually laugh about it, but you’ll never laugh if your wedding pictures don’t turn out as you expected.
Holly : We really like to help de-stress the day, keeping it organized and on schedule, and I think that’s important for most brides.
Christian: Make sure to choose a photographer that you get along well with! Personality is a big issue, in my opinion, and it’s one of the main reasons we meet with each couple before agreeing to photograph their wedding. Holly and I both are very sensitive to making people feel comfortable. if a bride is relaxed and comfortable, the pictures will turn our looking naturally beautiful.
